Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a young girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word"association. Ford was first interested in acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good fit there. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford's television debut was in the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
